A Summary of the December Virtual Adult Group

We had four SLP students who stutter in the group and we started off our discussion by hearing what led them to pursue this career path. It was empowering to hear they want to become SLPs to provide a better therapy experience for others after not having the best experience themselves. We also discussed the different ways we can introduce our stuttering – whether we disclose we are a person who stutters or use body language such as eye contact and a smile to indicate we are comfortable with our speech. It was a great conversation to hear the perspective of why some group members preferred one way over the other. The important takeaway is it is each person’s choice to choose how and when they disclose and we should not feel pressured by others to do so. We ended the discussion tonight talking about isolation and loneliness and what we can do to combat it. We all agreed having the stuttering community is a great outlet and way to feel connected to similar people. I look forward to January’s meeting!
